Always Mission-Ready: Reliable Power for Ground-Based Air Defense Systems

Modern ground-based air defense systems must remain mission-ready around the clock while reliably supplying power to complex radar, communications, and fire control systems, as well as launchers. As such, their effectiveness depends on an uninterrupted, stable, and highly mobile power supply.

At the same time, efficiency and sustainability requirements are increasing – modern diesel engines, combined with intelligent energy management, not only reduce emissions and fuel consumption but also minimize the logistical effort involved in refueling.

VINCORION develops and manufactures high-performance power systems that are precisely tailored to these requirements. For decades, our solutions have stood out for their durability, availability, and operational reliability, and have proven themselves in numerous applications – most notably in the PATRIOT and IRIS-T SLM air defense systems.

IRIS-T SLM Power Supply:

Compact, efficient gensets from VINCORION supply power to the IRIS-T SLM launchers. This ground-based air defense system is an integral part of the European Sky Shield.

PATRIOT Power Supply:

Our power systems, manufactured in Germany, have been used in the PATRIOT surface-to-air missile system for more than 40 years, reliably supplying power to the radar, command post, launcher, and communications system. Powerful, rugged, and now available as a hybrid system.

Hybrid Power Systems for PATRIOT:

The next-generation power supply for the PATRIOT surface-to-air missile system deployed worldwide relies on innovative hybrid technology to ensure maximum efficiency, reliability, and operational readiness. Built-in power electronics enable power to be drawn from the grid, and energy storage modules serve as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

Other Platforms:

In addition, VINCORION units reliably supply power to a wide range of other ground-based surveillance, reconnaissance, and location systems. Our scalable systems are deployed around the globe and are integrated into various defense architectures in collaboration with government and industry partners. Even in mobile or autonomous deployment scenarios, they ensure that sensitive sensor, radar, and control systems operate safely and reliably at all times.

NATO Air Defense & Integrated Systems

The challenge: Complex ground-based air defense systems such as PATRIOT require a continuous, highly available, and resilient power supply for radars, command posts, launchers, and command and communication centers – all while maintaining minimal logistical vulnerability.

The solution: Our hybrid power systems combine conventional gensets with energy storage systems and intelligent load management. This reduces the number of refueling operations per battalion from 72 to 24 per day, lowers the acoustic and thermal signature, and significantly increases operational endurance.

Radar & Surveillance

The challenge: Search, fire control, and target-tracking radars must remain fully operational 24/7, often in remote deployment areas without power grid access and under challenging environmental conditions. Power outages are mission-critical in this context.

The solution: VINCORION’s hybrid power systems, featuring automatic UPS switching and energy storage, ensure uninterrupted operation even during load spikes or power outages. This increases system availability, reduces wear on the primary units, and minimizes logistical complexity.

Mobile Command & Control Centers

The challenge: Mobile command and control centers (C2) must be mission-ready as fast as possible and continue to function without interruption, even when load requirements fluctuate significantly – due to IT, communications, and sensor systems, for example.

The solution: Our power systems are precisely tailored to these load requirements and automatically adapt to variable load profiles through intelligent power management. When combined with energy storage systems, they enable highly stable operation and reduce fuel consumption by up to 48 percent – while simultaneously lowering emissions, noise levels, and maintenance requirements.

Next-Gen Power Supply Systems

Efficient. Reliable. Mission-ready.

We are developing our next-generation power supply systems on behalf of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) with the aim of making NATO’s air defense more resilient. Thanks to a state-of-the-art hybrid system architecture with energy storage systems, these units are particularly powerful and rugged.

Next Generation

A system architecture tailored to the load profile increases efficiency and reduces emissions. This offers tangible tactical advantages: Longer operating times mean fewer refueling trips and, consequently, fewer logistical operations, fewer personnel tied up in support tasks, and fewer vulnerable supply lines in the field. Emission downgrade (MissionUpgrade) technology enables the use of alternative fuels in accordance with NATO’s Single Fuel Policy. The use of energy storage modules ensures a maximum level of supply reliability by guaranteeing an uninterrupted supply of power.

  • Reliable power supply: built-in energy storage modules enable seamless switching between the diesel engine and other power sources, such as commercial grid power
  • Efficient and low-emission thanks to a system architecture tailored to the load profile
  • Mission-ready in no time: standardized ISO container interfaces, minimal installation effort, and automated system startup
  • Enhanced defensive posture thanks to a lower acoustic and thermal signature
  • Modern user interface with built-in test equipment (BITE) for quick troubleshooting and repair

Unparalleled Performance for PATRIOT – Around the Globe for Over 40 Years

For decades, we have been supplying high-performance power systems for the world’s most successful surface-to-air missile defense system: PATRIOT. Through close collaboration between Raytheon, the user nations, and VINCORION, we guarantee tactical superiority in the field by providing a reliable power supply for radar, command posts, launchers, and communication systems.

At a Glance

Radar Set / RS

The Radar Set (RS) is responsible for target detection, tracking, and engagement, and operates using the track-while-scan method.

VINCORION’s contribution: Our mobile, tactical power supply system, the EPP radarV, serves as the primary power supply for the PATRIOT system’s multifunction radar and fire control station. Two independent 150 kW diesel generator sets, connected via a power distribution unit, deliver the 400 Hz supply of power.

Engagement Control Station / ECS

The PATRIOT system’s Engagement Control Station (ECS) is one of the few manned components. Three soldiers operate the system, analyze threats, and issue launch orders.

VINCORION’s contribution: Alongside the multifunctional radar, the fire control station is powered by the EPP radarV mobile power supply system.

Information Coordination Central / ICC

At the Information Coordination Center (ICC), tactical decisions are made at the battalion level and then relayed to up to six engagement control stations. It handles central communications with state-of-the-art weapon, reconnaissance, and command platforms.

VINCORION’s contribution: Our EPU commandV mobile power supply system delivers a 400 Hz supply of power to the PATRIOT system’s ICC.

Launching Stations / LS

The Launching Stations (LS) are used to launch the guided missiles. Depending on their configuration, one launching station can hold between 4 and 16 guided missiles.

VINCORION’s contribution: Through its integrated EPS launcherV, which is designed to handle typical and actual load profiles, VINCORION offers a reliable solution to this challenge. The launching stations are primarily powered by the genset, which has an output of up to 15 kW.

Antenna Mast Group / AMG

The Antenna Mast Group (AMG) connects multiple PATRIOT units over long distances via up to four high-reliability UHF radio links.

VINCORION’s contribution: The EPS launcherV 15 kW genset, mounted on a single-axle trailer, can be used as the power supply.
